Our Programs: Education Southeastern Education Center 4050 North 34th Street Milwaukee, WI 53216 414.875.9452 mschlumpf@syfs.org The Southeastern Education Center provides educational services for up to 90 middle school students a semester from sixth through eighth grades who are referred from Milwaukee Public Schools. These students work intently on their attendance and behavior, besides academic subjects such as reading, math, science, English, and social studies. Originally launched in 1993 as the Southeastern Alternative School as an intensive year-round day treatment program, we have provided over 1,000 youth and their families a unique blend of treatment, support and academic services. Our experience has shown us that without intervention, youth whose behavior requires reassignment to an alternative school are often at-risk for delinquency, academic failure, and increased gang activity. It is to these very youth that Southeastern has been dedicated to serve for over a quarter century. Student Eligibility Southeastern Education Center accepts behavioral reassignment students appropriately referred through the MPS Division of Parent & Student Services. These students are served by providing them opportunity to improve academic deficiencies. Students experience this opportunity through an integration of daily classroom instruction, educational projects, motivational speakers and focused educational field trips. Goals Goals in Southeastern Education Center's Plan are to keep our attendance average above 70% and have more than 70% of our students pass four of their core courses. In addition, students will raise their grades in English and Math by over 10% in the semester they are placed at Southeastern. Curriculum Modification Southeastern has adopted an integrated curriculum designed for use with students who have been identified as at-risk for not graduating from high school. More specifically, the curriculum incorporates social living skills and affective issues with basic academic instruction. Core academic subjects of Reading, English, Math, Science and Social Studies/History are provided. Art, Physical Education, Health and Computer Assisted Instruction are also provided to all students. Where possible, the academics are tied to real life situations so that students will see the relationship between academics and their past, present, and potential experiences. Speakers, field trips and projects help make the subjects meaningful. The student to staff ratio is eight to one. Support Services The school Director and Administrative Assistant provide backup for the Teacher(s) and Youth Specialist(s). Agency and MPS Social Workers as well as Special Education Teachers are available to work with the students. Bike Rehab Project Southeastern Youth & Family Services proudly continues to sponsor a unique volunteer bicycle rehabilitation program located at the school. Henry "Buzz", a retired teacher, heads the project and, in addition, teaches bicycle safety and repair to Southeastern middle school students. Each year "Buzz" collects, repairs and donates close to 200 bicycles to needy inner city children and their families. Bicycles have been given to children of local church summer work programs, the Mary Ryan Boys and Girls Club, families from Somalia and Asian U.W.M. students. Community Service Students give back to the community through service projects such as the meal program at the Rescue Mission each month and visits to nursing homes. |
