Better than being high

When Alonzo was placed at Noah House Group Home, the team there had two months to prepare him for a court review hearing. They worked to help him stay clean from alcohol and drugs, improve academically, make better choices, and avoid negative temptations.

 Alonzo quickly understood his situation and adjusted to the rules and expectations. He participated in all treatment services, actively worked on understanding his issues with alcohol and drugs and made a solid commitment to improving in school.

 He stayed clean for the entire two months, earned the resident of the month award, demonstrated appropriate peer behavior, went on multiple home visits and returned to the community successfully.

At his review hearing, before making his ruling, the judge asked Alonzo to stand up and approach him. The judge held out his hand and said, “Congratulations young man. I am very proud of you, and if you need anything please do not hesitate to ask me.”

 They shook hands, and the judge ordered that Alonzo could return home to his mother immediately. Everyone in the room was astonished; because it was the first time anyone had seen a judge respond this way to a client’s success.

 Alonzo’s reaction: “Wow, that felt a hundred times better than being high.”
